Two days to go and we have hot water, heating and most of the electrics! Immediate pressure is the parquet floor; finished sanding and now sealing with Fiddes Hardwax Oil - much easier done without occupants. It will be a long way off complete, but liveable.
Must be nearly finished now we're thinking about door handles. These are cut from the original stair handrail - simply ergonomic. Brushed up nicely too. Thinking we'll leave them woody on a painted door.
Nothing quite like a deadline to push things along. There's just two weeks to go until we move in and seemingly impossible amounts to do. But looks can be deceptive, and beneath the chaos lurk a number of elements already or nearly completed.
We salvaged some internal cedar boarding from the original house, had it sand blasted, sanded and now it's gracing the entrance porch. Hard to photograph...
With the new year came a new floor, or at least a new floor finish. Both upstairs and down, we have laid Industrial Parquet supplied by UK Wood Floors, Oak upstairs and the darker Smoked Oak downstairs. The surfaces have still to be sanded, filled, and waxed but already it's starting to unify the spaces. It's robust enough for the kitchen and bathrooms too, so no threshold strips.
The adhesive is Mapei's Ultrabond Eco S955, like liquid Caramac. |
